Black and white Sunday: my workstation

Paula's Black and White challenge was irresistible for me this week. I had to see what the sites and subjects of my loving labour over the last six weeks looked like in b&w (in which, I hasten to add, I'm a rank amateur.) I've “worked” harder looking after my twin Polish grandchildren than I ever worked as teacher and consultant. My workstations have been far more attractive: a small palace near the apartment, a nearby playground, and Łazienki parklands with their flowers and fountains and waterways and bridges and statues. And my clientele have been far more rewarding: two-year-olds full of mischief and love, and interesting conversation and quick learning.

  1. I think that Maja would like a pet dog 🙂 Thank you for this post, Meg. I have already picked my favourite. Wishing the little one to get better soon.

  4. I like best the photo with the children in the car. The black-and-white format really suits the vintage look, albeit modified. Sorry to learn that one of the children has been ill.

    • Jaś has a temperature, which is being monitored by a temperature-taker our mothers would have loved – mere touch and tell: none of that glass-tube-under-the-tongue nonsense. That car is a particularly good piece of play equipment, as is the fire engine in the same playground.

  5. You’re a natural, Meg! These are superb studies and they definitely win something in black and white. I think I like the first one best and Maja’s expression, but they’re all beautiful. Hope Jas is well soon. 🙂

    • Thank you Jo. B&W is alien territory, but I couldn’t resist. Sadness approaches. J is already pretty well home. I’m a bit edgy about posting kid photos and I may delete the post, when I’ve finished harvesting accolades!

  6. I love the black and white treatment, my favourite though is #1 as I like the curves of the bridge, the shadows of the bike and Maja’s pensive expression. Hope your boy gets better soon so you can enjoy the few remaining days with them before you are back on the big bird in the sky – I don’t know how you cope with all the flying!

    • The flying doesn’t bother me the way it does you – I hope saying this doesn’t presage a hell-trip! I’ll actually see more of the kidlets with Jaś sick – I can take Maja out while other babcia stays with him, or vice versa. I’m glad you like the photos: your liking means something.

  7. Hi Meg,

Black and white is a very different feel hey! And I think you are pretty expert already. When r u back? I know it’s soon and guess you are steeling yourself for the leaving. Wondering whether you’re going to write the story of ‘the secret life of twins?’ See you back in Moruya.

Btw I will be in Sydney at the weekend and coming back on a morning train on Monday 15th. (Just in case it coincides with you movements.) No car this time unfortunately as last week when I left it at Bomaderry for six days it got vandalised. Otherwise would be nice to share the journey if by coincidence it worked! Love Sandy

    • “Secret life of twins” is a great title, my writing mentor. Thanks for the “pretty expert” tag!

I return on Sunday, unfortunately. Sorry about the car – much damage? Probably won’t see you – I leave again on Wednesday and I still have to pack for six weeks in Standthorpe.

  8. I think these are lovely in black and white, the second and the last are my favourites, because the contrasts are excellent. So you’re on countdown now, it will be hard for you, they are little people you can have real chats with now. My youngest grandbabies and their mummy and daddy arrive today so I’m very excited 🙂

    • Thank you my friend! The last is my favourite too, which is why I put it last – a kind of crescendo. It’s been interesting seeing the preferences of other people. I’m glad I posted than all. I will miss them, dreadfully. They’ll change so dramatically between now and February when they come to Australia for a holiday, and even more because they start pre-school after the summer break.

Enjoy time with your delicious little ones (and of course their parents.) Where from? And for how long?

  9. I love the B & W it focuses in on the children and that last photo is superb, it is nicely balanced and giving a sense of place with the figures and building, I love the slight pensive tilt of the head and being surrounded by the flowers. I think I would also try it with the 2 top figures cropped out for a different emphasis.
